~ THURS, 26 April - Ranggoaini Jahja, a visiting activist from Indonesia speaks. Ranggoaini is a young woman leader from PRD (Peoples Democratic Party) whose background includes working with Nike workers and evaluating programmes for street children, 5pm to 7pm, at NZCTU Level 7, West Block Education House, 178 Willis St. For more info contact John Maynard tel (04) 973 6373.
~ SUN, 29 April - commemoration of the signing of Te Tiriti o Waitangi in Port Nicholson. Wellington Tenths Trust and Network Waitangi Wellington have prepared an information kit on this historic event; as the date falls on a Sunday this year, the kit will be dedicated at a service at 10am, in Trinity Church, Newtown (beside the Newtown Union Health Service) and a display of the kit will be at the Newtown Library during the following week. The contents include the story of the signing - the chiefs who signed, where, why and the significance of that for today; stories of descendants both Mäori and Päkehä; a copy of Te Tiriti o Waitangi, including the 'Port Nicholson' page; heritage tour information and a self-drive trip around Whanganui-a-tara harbour; and where groups can go for other resources. There will be a gathering to celebrate the life and work of Elsie - writer, historian, champion of peace, the environment, and women's rights. Speakers include Keith Locke, Maureen Birchfield, Brian and Anita Easton, and Alistair Campbell; there will be an opportunity for those present who knew Elsie to also share their memories of her; and light refreshments. * Free training for Wellington women during May and August 2001 - training for women, topics include: communication skills; the Treaty of Waitangi; homophobia; working in collectives; rape, women and the legal system; rape and sexual abuse and more. Wellington Independent Rape Crisis will be running two training sessions this year; they are free, comprehensive and heaps of fun. Guaranteed to be challenging, each session is for five evenings and two weekends. The first training session begins on 12 and 13 May, and the second on 11 and 12 August. ~ SAT, 28 April - ‘Fight for the living: honour the dead’, International Workers Memorial Day celebration. Starts at 11-30 am at the Workers Memorial Stone (in the reserve behind Science Alive, old Christchurch Railway Station) with Jim Consedine, Ruth Dyson MP, Diane O’Keefe from Finsec and Wayne Butson - General Secretary RMTU; 1200 noon, one minute silence to remember all workers killed on all jobs, then release of black balloons representing those workers, a representative from Faithful and Burt families will lay a wreath and a memorial tree will be planted. 12-30pm, refreshments at the Grosvenor Lounge Bar. Organised by RMTU and Finsec.
