An Open Easter Letter: 'Give Us Our Daily Beer'

Published: Thu 12 Apr 2001 12:36 AM
Dear Mr Hawkins
Why are the police opposing Bar licences for Good Friday? Are they now our moral guardians? Surely their job is to protect our lives and property, not save our souls. But perhaps they¹re too short staffed to maintain foot patrols in the central city, AND run booze buses, and check points, AND sleep in their cars while their speed cameras flash out the back. Best we just close the bars, huh?
Christians have a right to hold their beliefs, express their opinions and celebrate their faith. I support that. But they do not have the right to impose their beliefs or celebrations on non-Christians.
It is just as immoral for me to drag a man from a church into a bar and douse him with beer as it is for him to drag me from a bar into a church and douse me with holy water. It is also just as wrong for me to force the closure of a church on my special day (or any day) as it is for anyone else to force the closure of a bar or another business on their special day (or any day).
Live and let live.
