Unemployment Numbers Fudged Again

Published: Fri 23 Mar 2001 03:01 PM
"How low can unemployment go?" asks Steve Maharey. "How low will Maharey go in his efforts to pull the wool over the sheeple's eyes?" replies Libertarianz Spokesman Lindsay Mitchell. "Have a closer look at the figures, Steve, and you might find yourself asking ‘how low can the actual hours worked go?’" she says.
"Actual hours worked are down by two percent since December 2000. Even the stupidest sheeple should be able to figure out that if less work is getting done then overall productivity is down."
"This leads me to question the nature of these "new jobs". Statistics New Zealand say that the rate is being driven by increases in full- time employment yet it is undeniable that individuals are working fewer hours. Have they redefined the meaning of ‘full-time’? Somebody isn’t telling us the whole story, but that’s not unusual when the story is told by a politician."
"Its disappointing but hardly surprising that a politician can't understand how "real" jobs are created," concludes Mitchell. "Perhaps, instead of patting himself on the back for fleecing the voters yet again," says Mitchell, "he and his government should stop strangling employers with crippling taxation rates and burdensome regulations. Get out of their way so that they can create some real jobs."
