ALRANZ: Death of Dr. Herbert Green

Published: Thu 8 Mar 2001 10:34 AM
"While ALRANZ expresses its condolences to Dr.Herbert Green's family and friends on his passing, we should not forget the others who have cause to remember his name." said Craig Young, ALRANZ Research Officer today.
"In the early seventies, Green was an active supporter of SPUC, made unsubstantiated charges about clinical safety at the Auckland Medical Aid Centre, and appeared as a witness for SPUC at the Royal Commission into Contraception, Sterilisation and Abortion in 1977."
"We now know that Dr.Green was also involved in a highly unethical experiment that was designed to test his own unsubstantiated theories about the relationship between precancerous lesions and later development of carcinoma in situ for women who had cervical cancer. Had it not been for the vigilance of Sandra Coney and current Alliance MP Phillida Bunkle, how many other women would have died or suffered from Green's contempt for informed consent?"
"Have the New Zealand anti-abortion movement learnt anything at all from this? At a recent SPUC Conference, they discussed "informed consent." One can only wonder if they remember that their former colleague was so closely involved in this- and whether women who come across anti-abortion doctors do receive balanced informed consent about the risks of pregnancy and childbirth, as they should under the Code of Health and Disability Consumers Rights."
"ALRANZ would also like to remember the women involved in Green's "unfortunate experiment" at National Women's Hospital today."
