PSA ‘Buoyed’ By Government Response On Performance Pay
The PSA today said it was buoyed by - and supportive of – comments by the State Services Minister, Trevor Mallard on
performance pay in the public sector.
‘The general principles, as outlined today by the Minister, sit very much in line with our position on this – a position
we have held and been advocating for some time,’ PSA national secretary Richard Wagstaff said.
‘There is a wide range of happenings and practices in this area.
‘But the overall result is that performance pay hasn’t worked in the public sector as a satisfactory way of rewarding
people or motivating them in the important work they do,’ Wagstaff said.
‘It all needs to be bought into line with an agreed and common approach and, yes, the worst of the current excesses do
need to be stopped,’ he said.
‘We accept these changes will take time. The PSA looks forward to playing a central role, along with chief executives,
in the much-needed development of clear and acceptable guidelines,’ he said.
