Wellington youth will have the opportunity to learn more about the Select Committee review of cannabis laws and
contribute to the debate at the Youth Forum on Cannabis Law Reform 2001 at Parliament's Banquet Hall on Wednesday 24
January 2001.
Forum coordinators Ben Knight and Deborah Morris said "This is a chance for youth to get involved, learn to write a
submission and give their MPs something to think about! The forum is about encouraging understanding of how to
participate in the government's consultation process and also of the issues associated with both sides of the cannabis
law reform debate. These are issues most likely to affect young people."
"The day will open the doors of parliament to young people and provide support for their participation in an essential
social, economic and political issue," they added.
The forum will involve presentations from Wellington Central MP Hon Marion Hobbs, Youth Affairs Minister Laila Harre,
Pat Lynch from the NZ Catholic Education office and Sally Jackman of the NZ Drug Foundation.
Workshops will be run on a range of topics including submission writing for the cannabis review, effective drug
education strategies as seen by young people and youth participation in politics.
