'Holocaust' Lee Offers Local Fascists More Powers

Published: Mon 13 Nov 2000 08:46 AM
Ratepayers be VERY afraid! "The Government's 'Summary Document' on local government policy shows that Sandra 'Holocaust' Lee intends to give local authorities the legal ability to regulate, manage, and tax every aspect of New Zealanders lives," warns Libertarianz leader Peter Cresswell.
Ratepayers and property owners should be outraged that Sandra 'Holocaust' Lee thinks councils are "not allowed to operate with sufficient flexibility." "Adrian Chisholm's battle with Auckland City Council shows that councils already have far too damn much flexibility to destroy private property, and harass and bankrupt a ratepayer," says Cresswell. "They don't need 'flexibility'," he says, "they need tying up!"
Already, councils in various parts of the country regulate the colour you can paint your house; they prohibit trimming branches on your trees; they prohibit use of your land by declaring "significant natural areas" on it.
They send ratepayers ever-increasing bills to pay for art galleries, transport terminals and other schemes that nobody would ever pay for if given the choice, and to pay for enforcement officers to ruin good New Zealanders. "Mind you," notes Cresswell, "it's no surprise that the historically challenged Ms Lee would once again takes great pride in driving other people to pay for what she likes."
Libertarianz would NOT allow regional and local councils "more flexibility." On the contrary. Following a requirement that they privatise all the services they provide (with the shares in the companies operating those services distributed to ratepayers) they would abolish them.
