Maori Violence

Published: Thu 31 Aug 2000 10:57 AM
Maori leaders and elders must take full responsibility for their part in the burgeoning violence and child abuse among Maori which is a phenomenon of the last forty years.
Resentment leads to anger which leads to violence and some Maori leaders like Mrs Turia, associate Maori Affairs minister, are at the forefront in promoting resentment.
Most Maori can pursue justice without resentment and make forgiveness and reconciliation their aim, but those who do not should be recognised for the harm they are doing to their own people.
The Christian Heritage Party recognises the Treaty of Waitangi and applauds the attempts to reconcile past injustices but in no way supports the concept that bad behaviour can be blamed on historical events. Each person has the option of choosing justice with forgiveness, or resentment, anger and self justification.
