WAITARA STATE MURDER
The result of the police inquiry into the state murder of Steven Wallace should be of no surprise, said Shaun Wakelin of PEI.
"Out of all deaths caused by police in this country thus far, not one (police conducted) inquiry has found police culpable...".
Mr Wakelin said this is not to suggest that police are entirely responsible or that people should be seeking vengeance; however,
"...when people are raped, assaulted or killed by police it is important that police are open to public scrutiny."
The PEI advocates that everything the state does should be made transparent to the public at all times.
"It is time for the government to stop jumping to the defence of police everytime they kill people...and, it is time for this country's establishment media to stop building misleading representations of people after they're dead...."
For example nearly every major daily this week has drawn attention to irrelevancies (such as past convictions) concerning Steven Wallace.
"The issue is that Steven was shot to death by police - he can't speak for himself...give his family a break and stop portraying as victims those police officers who kill people..", said Mr Wakelin.
