ALRANZ: Spuc Civil War Welcomed, With Revervations
"ALRANZ has been monitoring the growing antagonisms between National SPUC and their expelled former Christchurch branch.
We had heard rumours about their expulsion after the former Christchurch branch put out an anti-abortion voter's guide
that played up the anti-abortion stance of the Christian Heritage Party." Craig Young, ALRANZ Research Officer responded
to a Christchurch Press article today.
"The former Christchurch SPUC is an extremist group. It favours the total prohibition of abortion under the abandoned
draconian Status of the Unborn Child Bill. From South Africa, we know that if abortion is made illegal, women die. In
1994, their Medical Research Council found 425 women died from anti-abortion laws before the ANC liberalised abortion
law there. The former Christchurch SPUC may also not feel bound by National SPUC opposition to anti-abortion direct
"One only hopes we do not see the fragmentation of the New Zealand anti-abortion movement into even more extreme
organisations that assist the assassination and computer website targeting of abortion providers." said Mr. Young
