Anderton, Both Parasite and Looter
James Anderton calls oil companies ‘parasites’. Libertarianz leader Peter Cresswell thinks it unsurprising such a word trips so freely from his lips.
“He is after all in a government that extracts more tax per litre than oil companies take in profit,” points out Cresswell. “If he was truly concerned with lowering petrol prices - rather than just attracting headlines and bullying businesses – then he has the means at hand to do just that.”
“At the stroke of his government’s pen he could slash petrol prices overnight by at least 20 cents/litre (plus GST) by removing the component of petrol tax NOT going into roading.”
“I don’t expect to see this business-bashing hypocrite do any such thing of course. He might however give some thought to the effects on petrol prices if the proposed carbon taxes are ever instituted. Will he then have the courage to berate his green colleagues for sucking the life blood out of communities?”
