ALRANZ Condemns CHP Outburst Over Emergency Contraception
The Abortion Law Reform Association of New Zealand has welcomed the latest contraceptive to receive Pharmac approval, as well as the establishment of its new "emergency contraceptive" category.
ALRANZ also condemned the Christian Heritage Party's health spokesperson, Gael Donoghue, over her comments that levonogesterol/postinor-2 was an "abortifacient."
Craig Young, ALRANZ Research Officer said: "Again,we have the absurd anti-abortionist position that a multicellular ball should be treated as the equivalent of a human being. So what if the effects of emergency contraceptives cause the dislodgement or non- implantation of that fertilised egg? After all, medical research indicates that over two-thirds of all fertilised eggs do not implant on the uterine wall anyway."
"And of course this emergency contraceptive went through exhaustive clinical trials. Of course its providers will abide by the provisions of the Code of Health and Disability Consumers Rights, just as they did with third-generation oral contraceptives."
"Does Mrs.Donoghue have any sound pharmacological evidence that levonogesterol/postinor-2 is harmful? That is not what the evidence that ALRANZ received from the UK Medicines Control Agency told us."
