People With Intellectual Disabilities To Tell Select Committee To Throw Bill Out
Three women with intellectual disabilities will be among those presenting a submission on the Intellectual Disability
(Compulsory Care) Bill to the Health Select Committee tomorrow.
Rosemary Scully, Fiona Russell and Cindy Wigley have strong feelings on the Bill. They believe it takes away the rights
of people with an intellectual disability and they intend telling the committee it should be thrown out.
The women represent people who belong to People First, a nationwide group for people with an intellectual disability.
They believe it is important that politicians hear from those who will be affected if the Bill were to become law.
"Just because someone looks different, it doesn't mean they are dangerous," Rosemary Scully said today.
"Sometimes we find it hard to understand what's going on and we get scared and unsure," Fiona added. "That sometimes
leads to people thinking the wrong things about us."
"It's a breach of human rights!" added Cindy Wigley.
Rosemary and Fiona have travelled to Wellington from Dunedin to speak to the committee and Cindy is from Whangarei.
