Mayor O’Dea’s implication that Greenpeace supports logging on the West Coast is inaccurate, claimed Greenpeace today.
Globally Greenpeace is campaigning to halt illegal logging in the Amazon as part of a long-standing international
forestry campaign. In New Zealand, Greenpeace has clearly opposed all the major schemes Timberlands have put forward.
“We have made it quite clear through our campaigns that Greenpeace opposes the logging of primary lowland indigenous
forest in New Zealand. We support the initiatives of Native Forest Action and Forest and Bird in their effective
campaigns to save New Zealand’s native forests. We also welcome Government initiatives to explore opportunities for
economic development on the West Coast which protect our environment” said Tricia Allen, Campaign Director for
Greenpeace New Zealand.
In 1997, Greenpeace said of Timberlands: "We strongly oppose the continued unsustainable rainforest logging in the
Buller, on the grounds that, with current sufficient plantation volumes and no local employment being provided by this
logging, it is in breach of the West Coast Accord.”
