WHY ARE WE DOING THIS?
Despite the widespread use of marijuana, problems associated with it are almost non-existent, especially when compared
to the other widely used drugs, alcohol and tobacco. Between them, the two legal drugs claim tens of thousands of lives
every year, while no deaths have ever been properly attributed to marijuana.
For the average marijuana user, the greatest problems are caused not by marijuana use, but by the law.
The New Zealand government spends $100 million annually criminalising these otherwise law-abiding citizens on the
grounds that marijuana use is dangerous, but they spend nothing on education about sensible marijuana use.
Marijuana is the most widely used illicit drug in New Zealand. 52% of all people aged 15-45 will admit to having tried
it, and 16% describe themselves as current users. The Netherlands now has a cannabis use rate a fraction that of New
Zealand’s, with only 4.5% of adults regular users, and as other countries abandon strict prohibition, marijuana law
reform has become the international norm.
Marijuana law reform is well overdue. The facts are on our side, and our time is now. Get up, stand up for marijuana law
reform!

organisation that campaigns for an end to marijuana prohibition. NORML supports the right of all adults to use, possess
and grow their own marijuana. NORML recognises that some commercial market for marijuana will always exist, therefore we
call for the establishment of a Royal Commission of Inquiry to look at how best to regulate that market.
