Auckland’s May Day march promises to put the heat on the Contracts Act
In Auckland every May Day for nearly 30 years workers, jobless and progressive people march up Queen Street as part of
the world festival of the oppressed. This year is no exception. Around the world expectations are that this May Day will
be a big one. Following on from the Seattle and Washington protests the anti-capitalist mood is growing.
In Auckland the May Day demonstrators are marching to get rid of the Employment Contracts Act properly. Workers,
unemployed, community groups and students will march up Queen Street at 5.30pm led by a pipe band. At Aotea Square the
marchers will set light to the hated Contracts Act. The fire department need not be concerned – the Waterpressure
group’s fire engine will be on hand to douse the flames.
May 1st Monday 5pm assemble at QEII Square (Downtown) 5.30pm march up to Aotea Square Programme: solidarity messages,
