Anti-Employment Tribunal Strikes Again
Libertarianz Deputy Leader Richard McGrath poured scorn on the Employment Tribunal after it fined a woman for running a
'sweat-shop'.
"As soon as people voluntarily agree to work for payment below that arbitrary level fixed by politicians called the
minimum wage, they apparently start sweating profusely," he said. "This has always seemed a bit mysterious to me."
"This employer was providing jobs for people who were probably incapable of creating wealth without the help of others,"
McGrath added. "These people had agreed to the hours and wages offered. Unless this employer had reneged on a contract
with her employees, the government had no right to intervene."
Libertarianz believe in a totally free job market, with the government's responsibility lying in contract enforcement.
"This employer should have been encouraged to hire more staff," said McGrath. "Instead of which she is now the victim of
legalised extortion in the form of a $350,000 fine. She will probably now have to lay off staff or close down her
operation altogether. I'm sure these redundant workers will curse the Employment Tribunal as they find themselves living
off taxpayers instead of earning an honest living."
