Libz Applaud Bishop's Private Welfare Plan
Libertarianz Deputy Leader Richard McGrath today backed moves by the Catholic Church to financially support women who
might otherwise choose to abort their pregnancies.
"Here we have a private charity willing to voluntarily provide money for the welfare of children as yet unborn," said Dr
McGrath. "My party applauds Bishop Dunn from Auckland who has made this generous offer."
Libertarianz advocate the full privatisation of social welfare. The first step in achieving this would be to let people
keep the money they have legally earned.
"If the state stopped crippling individuals by taxing them, there would be a lot more of this - people voluntarily
helping others," said McGrath. "Why can't politicians let New Zealanders provide aid personally and directly to those in
need, instead of forcibly relieving them of their money and deciding for them how it will be redistributed?"
Dr McGrath, who is a certifying consultant for the Abortion Supervisory Committee, will advise all patients seeking to
terminate their pregnancies of Bishop Dunn's standing offer. "I support any move to legalise abortion on demand," he
said. "But I will also back any change toward a welfare system that is funded voluntarily rather than at gunpoint, as it
is now."
