Modern Apprenticeships will Complement Existing Training
The Industry Training Federation of New Zealand today welcomed the Prime Minister’s announcement of the Modern
Apprenticeship scheme.
“Modern Apprenticeships are a real opportunity for new training of younger people. They will also complement existing
training managed by Industry Training Organisations (ITOs) ,” said Martin Eadie, Chair of the Industry Training
Federation – the national body for Industry Training Organisations (ITOs).
ITO’s have achieved a great deal in a relatively short period time. ITOs trained over 53,000 people in 1999 – a
threefold increase since 1993 and the highest number since records began in 1925.
“We have been working closely and constructively with the Government to develop the Modern Apprenticeship scheme and we
will continue that work through the Pilot,” Mr Eadie said.

Sealord Group
Sealord Group is one of New Zealand’s largest seafood companies employing 1,600 New Zealanders and with sales of around
$500 million. Since 1997 Sealord staff have achieved over 150 National Certificates. Currently, Sealord have around 250
employees in training programmes. Previously, Sealord had no formal or systemic training available.
“The Modern Apprenticeship scheme is an important addition to our existing industry training. The Modern Apprenticeship
scheme may be a good opportunity for Sealord to attract young talent into a dynamic export-led industry,” said Mr Lough.
Forest Industries Training
Forestry Industries is one of the largest ITOs in NZ training, around 8,000 people. Forestry is New Zealand’s third
largest exporter and employs approximately 25, 000 New Zealanders and is predicted to grow to 60, 000 in the next 25
years. Since 1995, Forest Industries has awarded around 500 National Certificates.
“The Council congratulates the Government on this new and additional training initiative. It is commendable that
Government will commit additional funding to the Modern Apprenticeship scheme thus expanding structured training
opportunities for the Industry,” said Mr Carruthers.
