PSA Press Release 8 March
Commitment to public
service spending essential
The clear indication from the Finance Minister, Michael Cullen, of increased state sector spending is ‘proof there is a commitment to rebuilding the capacity of the public service,’ says PSA national secretary, Richard Wagstaff.
‘We have suffered a decade of “shrinking the state” and that has been to the detriment of all New Zealanders,’ he said.
‘The problems this creates are starting to emerge more and more. And while that may have suited the philosophy of the National Government those days are thankfully now behind us.
‘Of course we will be interested in the detail when the budget is actually released but I am confident this Government understands the situation and knows what is required,’ he said.
‘What we have here is recognition that a healthy efficient public service is essential to the economic and social well being of the country,’ he said.
