“Canterbury MP Appointed to Key Select Committees”

Published: Wed 22 Dec 1999 03:48 PM
Clayton Cosgrove Member of Parliament for Waimakariri, was today appointed to Parliament’s all powerful Finance and Expenditure Select Committee and the influential Primary Production Select Committee.
“It Looks like my business is business,” Mr Cosgrove said.
“I’m delighted to be a member of these committees as they are both important to the people of Waimakariri. The Finance and Expenditure Select Committee monitors how all government departments behave and spend taxpayers money and that is extremely relevant to local people. The Primary Production Select Committee focuses on legislation and issues of concern to the primary sector especially in relation to farming.
“Primary production issues have tended in the recent past to be the ‘cinderella’ of politics. I want to work hard to ensure primary production is treated as the vital component of our economy, that it is,” said Mr Cosgrove.
“For a new Member of Parliament I am gratified to be given a chance to grapple with real, solid issues that make a practical impact on everyday life.
“Under MMP, select committees are the engine room of political action and I’m more than satisfied to go straight into the boiler rooms of policy,” concluded Mr Cosgrove.
