National & Labour Have Wrong Focus In Education

Published: Tue 19 Oct 1999 03:50 PM
National and Labour have the wrong focus in education putting buildings ahead of quality education for children according to ACT Education Spokesman Donna Awatere Huata.
Mrs Huata said the $1 billion National and Labour want to throw into a bidding war to pay for school halls should be spent on quality programmes, quality teachers and choice.
"It is time for a positive change in education. It is time to focus on the children in our schools and making sure that they are being taught properly.
"National and Labour have to front up and say how that $1 billion is going to improve things for the one in four children who leave school unable to read and write properly.
"Its time both Parties followed ACT's lead in education and put children and their education first.
"ACT's education policy to be announced next week will be a blueprint for the change and vision needed for New Zealand children to really succeed in our schools," said Donna Awatere Huata.
