Labour Policy Leaves Most Early Childhood Teachers Out In The Cold
“Labour’s plans to bring only kindergarten teachers under the state sector is elitist, and an insult to the majority of
early childhood teachers,” New Zealand First Education spokesperson, Brian Donnelly, said today.
“Most early childhood education is not delivered through kindergartens but through a variety of other providers. The
framework ‘Before Five’ has been designed to create a level playing field, and to best meet a variety of aspirations and
needs of parents.
“Labour purports to be concerned about Maori and Pacific Island pre-school education but is not promising to bring the
teachers who cater mainly for these children, under the state sector.
“It has not got the guts to stick with the implications of a framework which it created when last in government. Its
policy is a sop to the NZEI.”
“The rest of Labour’s policy is nothing more than a continuation of current work,” said Mr Donnelly.
