National Campaigns On Taxpayer Funds

Published: Fri 17 Sep 1999 09:49 AM
The New Zealand First Leader, Rt Hon Winston Peters, has accused Sir William Birch of misusing Parliamentary stationery and taxpayer funds for National Party political purposes.
Mr Peters has released a letter from Sir William circulated to employers warning them of the consequences of Labour’s industrial policies.
“These letters have gone out with the House of Representatives logo at the top, and the National Party logo on the bottom of the page.
“This is blatant misuse of official stationary for National propaganda and we have asked the Speaker to investigate the matter, and to have the letters withdrawn.
“As a former Treasurer, this Minister should be saving taxpayers’ funds, not using them for National’s election campaign,” said Mr Peters.
