The Egg Is Really On Labour’s Face

Published: Tue 14 Sep 1999 03:48 PM
The Leader of New Zealand First, Rt Hon Winston Peters MP, said today he understood the anger on the West Coast that led to eggs being thrown at the Deputy leader of the Labour Party.
“ The people of the West Coast are now an endangered species after the final betrayal by Labour and the Alliance over the sustainable management of the West Coast’s indigenous forestry resource.
“ I am amazed at Labour’s effrontery in attempting to borrow our own well announced programme of giving the Coast’s resources back to the people of the Coast.
“ The reality is that Labour and the Alliance will shut the West Coast down.
“ The reality is that National and ACT will shut the West Coast down after selling it’s few remaining assets.
“ In stark contrast, New Zealand First will ensure that the commitments made in the 1986 West Coast Accord will continue to be honoured.
“ It is also time for the critical decisions taken about the West Coast to be taken by the Coasters themselves, not by some politician or overpaid bureaucrat in Wellington,” concluded Mr Peters.
