What do List MPs do?
A comment on the work of Annabel Young MP
Many people have little idea what MPs do. Party List MPs do exactly the same job as Constituency MPs. The difference is
that on non-sitting days Constituency MPs work from an office in their electorate, whereas List MPs are usually
allocated by their parties to look after a geographical area or a special interest group.
What Select Committees is Annabel on?
Since Annabel came into Parliament, she has worked on the Select Committees for Foreign Affairs Defence and Trade,
Regulations Review, Internal Affairs and Local Government and the Special Committee on the Primary Production Bills.
How did Annabel become a National Party List MP?
Annabel was nominated by the National Party in her home electorate of Wellington Central. National List MPs have gone
through a complicated selection process where they have to be supported in their home electorate and their home region.
They are then ranked by a national committee. The Party vote determines how many MPs each Party will have in Parliament.
What qualifications does Annabel have for Parliament?
Annabel has a law degree, an arts degree in political science and a Diploma in Accounting. She is admitted as both a
Chartered Accountant and as a Barrister and Solicitor.
Annabel was a tax specialist before she went into Parliament. She has also spent nine years as a Territorial Army
Officer in the Signals Corps.
