Latest Energy Statistics Released

The Government continues to closely monitor energy sector developments, the Minister for Enterprise and Commerce, the Hon Max Bradford, said today, on releasing the latest edition of the biannual Energy Data File.
The Energy Data File prepared by the Ministry of Commerce contains comprehensive statistics on energy supply and prices in New Zealand.
The latest edition shows, among other things, that in the 12 months to March 1999, compared with the previous year:
­ electricity generation rose by just over 1% to about 36,675GWh;
­ consumption of oil products (mainly petrol and diesel) increased by 1.5% to about 217PJ;
­ natural gas production rose by 3% to about 204PJ;
­ coal production rose by 5% to 84PJ, with exports rising by 9% to 36PJ.
