COMMERCE COMMISSION CHAIRMAN APPOINTED
The Minister for Enterprise and Commerce, Hon Max Bradford, today announced the appointment of Mr John Belgrave as chairman of the Commerce Commission.
Mr Belgrave is currently the Director of the State Services Commission's Y2K Project Office and the chairman of Standards Council of New Zealand.
He has been appointed Commerce Commission chairman for three years.
Mr Belgrave has an extensive understanding of competition issues and other economic considerations relevant to the Commerce Commission.
From 1989 until 1994 he was the Secretary of Commerce during which time competition law was being developed. He also has a good knowledge of consumer interests, having had overall responsibility for the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, which is part of the Ministry of Commerce.
Mr Belgrave has extensive management skills, having been Chief Executive of four major government departments.
In addition, Mr Belgrave was an Executive Director of the Bankers' Association from 1987 until 1989 and an Executive Director of the Electrical Supply Association from 1997 until January 1999. He was also a Director of Trade New Zealand from 1989 until 1994.
