Sir Douglas Myers’ Anti MMP Remarks Highly Predictable
The Rt Hon Winston Peters MP, Leader of New Zealand First, today said that Business Roundtable Chairman, Sir Douglas Myers’ anti MMP comments at a Tauranga Chamber of Commerce luncheon are highly predictable.
“Sir Douglas represents a select elite who do not want to see power shared and the public getting the increased standard of representation they get under MMP. No doubt Mr Myers longs to return to the days when a small but privileged group had a vastly disproportionate and unfeighted grip on power.
“New Zealanders and the people of Tauranga voted for MMP precisely for the reason that MMP requires the sharing of power—they will not allow Mr Myers and the likes of the Business Roundtable to take that power back off them.
“Sir Douglas and his mates will do everything they can to ensure that they get rid of MMP as soon as possible and return to the exclusive sharing of political power between National and Labour they enjoyed under First Past the Post.
“That arrangement may have benefited the likes of Sir Douglas but it did nothing for the average New Zealand family,” said Mr Peters.
Mr Peters said that the public would see through Sir Douglas’ motives and why he and a certain business and political elite are so against MMP and political power being shared with parties other than Labour and National.
