Friends of Town Belt propose Local Bill
For Immediate Release
Tuesday, July 13, 1999
Friends of the Town Belt met in Wellington last night (Tuesday) to quiz local MPs about their commitment to the Town Belt. About 25 people attended the meeting, which was addressed by MPs Annabel Young, Marion Hobbs and Richard Prebble and the Alliance candidate for Rongotai.
Annabel Young said that as a signed up member of the Friends she supported, in principal, their proposal; to have a Local bill to cover the Town Belt issues. "There is a lot of detail to be sorted out but the Town Belt is an icon of Wellington and we must protect it."
"This is an issue for cross-party work by Wellington MPs. A Local Bill is the best vehicle as it shows the commitment of local councils and maximizes the cooperation of local MPs on a local issue. We want to keep personalities and politics out of the Town belt."
Annabel Young said the Friends had drafted a bill that was possible and achievable.
