McDonald Calls for Random Cigarette Lighter Checks
Hon Robyn McDonald, Consumer Affairs spokesperson, today called for the Ministry of Consumer Affairs to better police
the sale of dangerous non child-resistant cigarette lighters.
"I am most concerned to hear reports of the continued sale of these lighters. They have been banned and they should be
dumped," she said.
The sale of child resistant lighters has been mandatory since 15 May 1999.
"During my time as Minister of Consumer Affairs I worked very hard to expedite the banning of non child-resistant
lighters. Evidence showed that this move would save young lives and some retailers are being totally irresponsible by
continuing to sell these products.
"Consumer Affairs must investigate the reported sales and move to make an example of the offenders.
"If there is an opportunity to save one child , then the Minister should be moving heaven and earth to make sure he
takes it," said Robyn McDonald
