Jobseekers in Invercargill on the rise
With more people on benefits now than when it took office, it’s clear that the Labour-led Government is failing
Invercargill, Invercargill MP Sarah Dowie says.
“The number of people living in Invercargill on the Jobseeker benefit has increased by 18 per cent in the last year.
With unemployment across New Zealand at historic lows, it’s unfathomable that there are more people on benefits than
when this Government took office.
“If people are laid off or can’t find work, then they can’t support their families.
“Under National, we were moving more people into work meaning they and their families were leading better lives. It’s
hard to believe the number of people on the job seeker benefit keeps increasing when they are employers who are
desperate for people to fill jobs.
“The Government is happy for that number to keep increasing, by reducing the number of sanctions imposed as well.
Sanctions should be, and always have been, a last resort, only imposed if someone repeatedly doesn’t show for
appointments or interviews.
“Being aspirational for New Zealanders includes giving people a helping hand when they need it the most, but also
expecting them to do their fair share and look for work.
“But the Government doesn’t think there should be any accountability for taxpayer’s money.
“This Government has pledged to be kindest and most compassionate Government yet, but it isn’t kind or compassionate to
reduce incentives to work. We think Kiwis are better off in work and creating opportunities for them and their
families.”
