The Government is abandoning democratic process as it seeks public submissions on legislation that doesn’t yet exist,
says ACT Leader David Seymour.
Just a few hours after the Prime Minister announced proposed firearms reforms, the Government called for New Zealanders to have their say even though a bill hasn’t been drafted.
“Calling for submission on legislation that doesn’t yet exist highlights what it wrong with this process.
“By forcing gun law reforms through in three weeks, the Government will ensure there is no real opportunity for New
Zealanders to have their voices heard on the proposals. It also risks producing a law that is ineffective.
“It’s deeply disappointing that the Government is responding to the Christchurch terrorist attacks by abandoning proper
democratic process.
“We must get these changes right to ensure they’re effective.
“It is important that we maintain our tradition of sober, robust law-making at all times, but especially now.
“The best way to show defiance is to refuse to erode our free society.”
