ACT welcomes cannabis referendum

Published: Tue 18 Dec 2018 12:09 PM
ACT Leader David Seymour has welcomed the Government’s announcement that a binding referendum on the recreational use of cannabis will take place at the 2020 general election.
“This is an important debate and I welcome the Government’s decision.
“The overriding aim of our drug policy should be to prevent harm to children. This is not being achieved through the regime we have in place now.
“There is growing demand from New Zealanders for a more liberal, health-focused approach to drugs as prohibition has been shown to be a failure.
“As we debate the merits of legalising cannabis, we should to look to jurisdictions in Canada, California and Colorado who have put in place more enlightened drug policy.”
