HomeFit a step towards Warrant of Fitness for homes says Green Party
The Green Party’s spokesperson on Housing, Marama Davidson, has welcomed a new initiative to improve the quality of
housing in Aotearoa New Zealand.
“HomeFit is exactly the sort of scheme that will give confidence to buyers and renters that their homes are healthy and
good for the environment. The work by New Zealand’s Green Building Council to create HomeFit is fantastic, it’s a simple
online system people can use to see if a home they’re living in, or looking to live in, is safe, healthy, warm, dry and
energy efficient,” says Green Party Housing spokesperson Marama Davidson.
“The Green Party has long called on government to create a warrant of fitness for rental properties, ensuring all homes
in New Zealand are warm and dry. No-one should be living in a cold damp house that makes them sick.
“Everyone deserves to have decent housing, whether they rent or own.
“Our standards need to be higher, and properly enforced.
“What the NZ Green Building Council is doing with its HomeFit initiative acknowledges the right to decent housing and
it’s providing a very simple, practical tool to help that happen,” says Marama Davidson.
“I hope people take advantage of HomeFit to check their home is up to scratch.
“I hope they also take advantage of HomeFit’s service to provide independent appraisals by trained assessors who can
identify damp, mould, insulation, heating, ventilation and other key areas that need to meet the HomeFit standard.
“And, where necessary, I hope people use it to see how they can deliver much-needed improvements in the standard of New
Zealand accommodation.”
