Prime Minister to promote global cooperation at UN Leaders’ Week
Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern will make the case for global cooperation on combating climate change and inequality, supporting the rights of women and children and promoting fair global trading rules when she joins leaders from around the world at the United National General Assembly in New York next week.
The Prime Minister will be promoting multilateralism and New Zealand’s interests at a wide range of speaking engagements, bilateral meetings, and media appearances.
“No country can fix a global problem on their own, we are all connected. Every person both benefits from and relies on global cooperation to address the challenges, big and small, facing our world,” said Jacinda Ardern.
“My key message for the week is the need for us to recommit to global rules and enhance our multilateral systems to better address challenges such as climate change, trade and the protection of human rights.
“For the past 70 years, the global rules-based system has supported our cultural and economic growth, and significantly reduced the risk of conflict between states. It’s important countries do not turn their back on this system.
“Opening week of the General Assembly is the largest gathering of world leaders on the international calendar. It’s a chance to advance New Zealand’s interests on the world stage, reconnect with partners and forge new alliances.
“During the week I will be seeking to build support for collective action – our best hope to address the global challenges we face – and ensure the views of New Zealand and our Pacific neighbors are heard on the international stage.
“Climate change will be a key focus of my week. I will be delivering the keynote address at the opening of UN Climate Week, speaking at the One Planet Summit hosted by the President of France and hosting the inaugural meeting of Carbon Neutrality Alliance, along with the Marshall Islands. Each will provide opportunities to highlight New Zealand’s significant climate change policy agenda and work alongside the Pacific as a global climate leader.
“I will also be making the case for a fair rules based system for global trade. New Zealand relies on all countries playing by the book and wants to see the benefits of trade shared evenly. I’ll be speaking on our progressive trade agenda at the Bloomberg Global Business Forum and taking opportunities to speak to European Union leaders to assess progress on our free trade talks.
“During the week I will engage in a range of bilateral discussions with fellow leaders and representatives including the UN Secretary General António Guterres, UNICEF Executive Director Henrietta H. Fore and UN Women Goodwill Ambassador Anne Hathaway to advance issues around women and children and sustainable development.
“Promoting New Zealand on the world stage is a key role of every Prime Minister. I will be appearing on the Today Show, undertaking a long form interview with Christiane Amanpour and sitting on the couch on the Late Show with Stephen Colbert to talk about our country to a combined television audience of over 7 million people.”
Jacinda Ardern will deliver New Zealand’s statement in the United Nations General Debate on 27 September.
