Government refusing to stand behind Kiwibuild
If first homebuyers thought a Kiwibuild home was going to give them a Government backed leg-up into the housing market
those hopes have been dashed today by Housing Minister Phil Twyford, National’s Housing and Urban Development
spokesperson Judith Collins says.
“Mr Twyford on the weekend claimed the reason the Government was inserting itself in housing developments was ‘to share
some of the risk to make it easy for the private sector to come in and develop and build and sell great places for
people to live, play and work’.
“But today he’s revealed that’s just not true because the Government is actually refusing to stand behind its Kiwibuild
houses and will leave first homebuyers to battle it out with the private developers should any construction issues
arise.
“The Government’s trying to buy credit by appearing to act but it’s not prepared to bear the responsibility of standing
behind its houses.
“All that’s happening is the Government is paying the private sector more to build the houses that were going to be
built anyway. As we’ve said all along, Kiwibuild will not result in more houses being built.”
