Energy Research Strategy welcomed
Research, Science and Innovation Minister Dr Megan Woods has today welcomed the launch of an Energy Research Strategy
for New Zealand developed by the National Energy Research Institute (NERI).
The strategy was informed by extensive consultation with the science system, representatives of industry associations
and government agencies, and identifies key medium-term issues facing New Zealand’s energy sector that will require
applied research to address.
“The Energy Research Strategy provides a collective voice for New Zealand’s science and energy sectors on where our
biggest challenges lie. It has identified that through a coordinated approach, we can significantly improve R performance in the energy sector,” says Minister Woods.
“The Strategy provides a useful framework to assist in informing the Government’s future approach to investment in
energy research.
“This Government sees an incredible opportunity ahead of us to build a better New Zealand for all our people – and to do
this we must respond and adapt to the challenges we are facing. We need the new ideas, the new innovations, and the new
ways of doing things that can only come from research.
“I am heartened to see NERI take such a leadership role in engaging with New Zealanders and stimulating discussion on
this crucial topic,” says Dr Woods.
NERI is a charitable trust with the primary purpose of enhancing New Zealand’s sustainability. It seeks to stimulate,
promote, co-ordinate and support high-quality energy research and education within New Zealand. More information can be found here.
