Paying people to have babies will increase child poverty
ACT stands for responsible parenting, not politically cynical payments to people who choose to have kids.
“We already have too many children born into poverty,” says party leader David Seymour. “Paying people to bring children
into the world will only make this worse.
“When we pay people to have babies, it encourages them to grow their families when they might not be financially
prepared or properly mature,” says Beth Houlbrooke, #2 on ACT’s list.
“In other words, Labour’s “best-start” policy could extend the misery of child poverty and even child abuse.
“Labour’s baby bonus is simply an election bribe. It does nothing to address the real causes of child poverty.
“The fact is, parents who cannot afford to have children should not be having them. ACT believes in personal
responsibility, meaning we stand with the majority of parents who wait and save before having children,” says Mrs
Houlbrooke.
