Ōhāriu to benefit from a new $50 million children’s hospital
MP Brett Hudson Ōhāriu says Wellington Regional Hospital’s new $50 million children’s hospital will hugely benefit local children and their families.
“In an extraordinary act of generosity Wellington property developer Mark Dunajtschik has committed to funding, building and then gifting a $50 million children’s hospital to Capital and Coast District Health Board,” says Mr Hudson.
“While many details are still to be confirmed, the new children’s hospital will be part of the existing hospital campus and is expected to include 50 inpatient hospital beds, as well as space for families to be together. It’s likely to span across 7,000m² over three floors.
“The development will benefit the 4,000 children and their families admitted to child health services at Wellington Regional Hospital each year, as well as over 5,000 children who attend nearly 38,000 outpatient appointments.
“This new $50 million children’s hospital will enable staff to provide enhanced care to our children, with the Mr Duanjtschik and his team keen to work alongside the clinical to design a fit for purpose, family centred hospital.
“It was great to be at Wellington Regional Hospital this morning for the announcement, where Mr Duanjtschik and the DHB’s chair Andrew Blair signed the Heads of Agreement.
“This critical step clears the way for the design and planning to get going. Construction is expected to begin early next year and will take around 18 months.”
