Mental health inquiry will help to save lives
The Green Party supports the findings of the People’s Mental Health Review, released today, and is calling on the
Government to now do its job and hold an inquiry into our strained mental health system.
“Time and time again we’re hearing stories of New Zealanders not being able to get the help they need. The Government
needs to do right by those people and their families, and find out why,” Green Party health spokesperson Julie Anne
Genter said.
“People accessing support have been let down by a mental health system missing in action, and they should have the right
to tell their story.
“The Green Party has consistently called for a wide-ranging national inquiry into our mental health system – it’s the
best way to get to the bottom of the issues facing our mental health system and the people who rely on it for help.
“We have a draft terms of reference ready that we welcome the Government to pick up immediately.
“There have been serious reviews of six DHBs’ mental health services in the last two years. I’m concerned that these
will have just led to more tinkering around the edges, not the comprehensive change New Zealand needs.
“The slow erosion of the overall health budget by $1.7 billion dollars since National came to power is hurting New
Zealanders.
“Our mental health system, and everyone who relies upon it, needs help. The first step is to have a nationwide mental
health inquiry,” said Ms Genter said.
