National must cut taxes before, not after, the election
The government cannot put tax cuts at risk by delaying them until after the election, says ACT Leader David Seymour.
“National is meant to be a low-tax party. Why is the Prime Minister muddling on something that should be a basic
priority for any centre-right government?
“Tax cuts should kick in immediately after this year’s Budget. The Prime Minister’s suggestion that he’ll wait until
next year to implement tax cuts is baffling, considering we may have a new Government at that stage.
“Jenny Shipley promised tax cuts in 1999, but could never implement them as she lost that year’s election. Sometimes a
tax cut in the hand is better than two in the bush.
“Yes, funding infrastructure and paying down debt are both important. But there’s no reason we can’t cut taxes too, even
if it means, shock-horror, that we have to scrap some wasteful spending along the way.
“Only a stronger ACT will ensure that tax relief is prioritised in every Budget, instead of just dangled as an election
bribe when it suits.”
