Tell voters the truth about Super, Bill
ACT Leader David Seymour says the Prime Minister should tell voters the truth: the age of Superannuation is going up.
"The Prime Minister evaded the inevitable in his interview on The Nation," says ACT Leader David Seymour
"The Prime Minister is numerate. He knows that, according to the Retirement Commissioner, the number of people aged 65 and over will double in the next 30 years, meaning changes to superannuation access are
inevitable.
"What voters deserve is certainty. Playing election games around superannuation only hurts people's ability to plan for
retirement.
"The Prime Minister should make a commitment in May's Budget: that the age of superannuation eligibility will rise over
a defined period of time. As a leader, Bill English should take the opportunity to give certainty to New Zealanders, who
make saving decisions based on the information government provides them.
"ACT's position is clear: Superannuation in its current form is unsustainable due to an aging population. Starting in
2020, Super eligibility should move gradually from age 65 to 67. The Government needs to spell out its position in
equally clear terms."
