FIGHT CLUB REPORTS PROVE GOVERNMENT WRONG ON SERCO
The Serco-Government relationship should well and truly be over given the latest reports on fight clubs in Serco-run Mt Eden Corrections Facility, says New Zealand First.
“The Government knew as early as 2009 that fight clubs at Mt Eden and other prisons were a reality and they did nothing about it,” says Corrections Spokesperson and former Senior Corrections Officer Mahesh Bindra.
“Five years later when further allegations were made, special monitors investigated the entire issue and identified that staff shortages were rampant and fight clubs still existed. The government gave Mt Eden an exceptional performance rating after receiving this report and constantly told Parliament they believed Serco’s staffing levels were adequate.
“Private-run prisons are a failure. Pure and simple.
“Surely the Government will now ring the final bell on Serco-run prisons in New Zealand,” says Mr Bindra.
