Recall high-risk offenders
New Zealand First says all high-risk offenders being monitored electronically should be recalled as copycat behaviour is
getting out of control with more people cutting off electronic monitoring bracelets.
“Yet another sex offender has cut off their bracelet and roamed about freely in the community – this copycatting has to
stop before an innocent member of the public suffers,” says New Zealand First Spokesperson for Corrections Mahesh
Bindra.
“Offenders classified as high-risk should be easy to identify. They should be locked up to keep the community safe while
laws are strengthened.
“We say that any offender who escapes from custody or destroys a monitoring device should serve a minimum prison
sentence – and be denied the soft option of home detention.
“Stronger laws around electronic monitoring are needed now. The government should bring the Electronic Monitoring of
Offenders Bill back to Parliament immediately, pass it under urgency and apply it to all those currently wearing
electronic monitoring bracelets.
“If the government can pass unnecessary flag laws under urgency they can surely do this to keep New Zealanders safe,”
