Coromandel MP: Remain Vigilant to Protect Our Kauri
Coromandel MP Scott Simpson is warning against complacency after new surveys of the region show kauri dieback disease
has not spread as widely as feared.
Scott Simpson MP says ‘The disease has only been confirmed on two sites on the Coromandel. This is a relief for
volunteers who’re working hard to prevent the disease from spreading. However we must remain vigilant so that kauri
dieback is contained.’
Mr Simpson says ‘Measures such as cleaning footwear, tyres and machinery when travelling to or from kauri forests remain
as important as ever. And I remind walkers to stay on the tracks.’
‘I have seen the strong commitment of Coromandel communities to protect our kauri. That was evident at Kauri 2000’s
excellent forums around the region over the weekend. If we all work together we can contain this disease and safeguard
the future of our precious trees.’
The Coromandel’s first case of kauri dieback was found in Whangapoua Forest in March. A second case has been discovered
on private land nearby.
