Report on Parental Engagement another strand in Government’s cable to lift student achievement
National MP and Chair of the Education and Science Select Committee, Dr Cam Calder welcomed the tabling of the report of
the Inquiry into Engaging Parents in the Education of their Children.
Prepared by the Education and Science Select Committee, the report puts forward a range of recommendations that could
help boost student achievement through better engagement with parents, families, whānau and communities.
“Our Government is making progress supporting schools to get parents involved in their children’s learning and we’re
already seeing the benefits.
“Children achieve more when their parents are engaged in their learning and work with teachers. This report suggests
ways we can make the most of this and support our schools and communities to be involved,” Dr Calder said
“There is no silver bullet to enhance engagement and a one-size-fits-all approach won’t suit all communities. Methods of
engagement must be flexible to suit the parents, the kids, the school, and the community.
“The report highlights some of the best examples our committee heard about; it attempts to determine which approaches
consistently improve engagement, and suggests how they might be implemented nationwide.” Dr Calder said.
