New Zealand First Leader Rt Hon Winston Peters pays tribute to the life of Solomon Whakahoro Te Whata, who has passed
away.
Mr Te Whata was one of the last two surviving Northland members of the Māori Battalion, which suffered enormous losses
of life in World War II.
“At the passing of another of our fine servicemen, we must reflect on the great sacrifice they made for all New
Zealanders.
“They went overseas, not knowing what they would face. Some gave their lives and are resting there, others returned and
had to put the horror of war behind them.
“New Zealand First bids Mr Te Whata farewell and wishes to let his family know that we have great respect for his
service to this country. He will always be remembered.”
