New parents deserve support - Labour will deliver
Labour will pass legislation delivering 26 weeks paid parental leave to New Zealand families in its first 100 days in
Government, Labour List MP Sue Moroney says.
Her Employment Protection and Parental Leave (Six Months' Paid Leave) Amendment Bill progressed through more of its
committee stages last night and would move swiftly to a final reading to become law under a Labour-led Government.
It will see parental leave increased to 22 weeks on July 1 next year and to 26 weeks on July 1 2017.
“National has thrown its toys at every turn to ensure my Bill doesn’t become law. If National hadn’t delayed and
filibusted since the end of last year, families of new-borns would already have been enjoying longer stays at home with
their babies.
“This little Bill has defeated the Government on four occasions – I look forward to its return to Parliament after the
election.
“It demonstrates the priority Labour gives to children and their families, and it shows the commitment Labour has to
investing wisely in New Zealand’s future,” Sue Moroney says.
