Our plan for better regional roads
Today I outlined the next steps in National’s plan to invest in our regional transport infrastructure.
Regional New Zealand has been vital to our economic recovery, but there are still more regional roading projects that we need to get underway to ensure safer journeys and continued growth.
If we have the privilege of being re-elected on 20 September, another strong, stable National Government will invest an extra $212 million in targeted funding to deliver eleven high-priority roading projects across the country, and investigate the viability of another three.
In the next term, we will start work on:
Kawarau Falls Bridge, in Otago
Mingha Bluff to Rough Creek realignment, in Canterbury
Akerama Curves Realignment and Passing Lane, in Northland
State Highway 35 Slow Vehicle Bays, in Gisborne
Normanby Overbridge Realignment, in Taranaki
Whirokino Trestle Bridge replacement, in Manawatu/Wanganui
Motu Bridge replacement, in Gisborne
Opawa and Wairau Bridge replacements, in Marlborough
Taramakau Road/Rail Bridge, on the West Coast
Loop road north to Smeatons Hill safety improvements, in Northland
Mt Messenger and Awakino Gorge Corridor, in Taranaki.
And further investigate the viability of:
Port of Napier access package, in Hawke’s Bay
Nelson Southern Link, in Nelson
Rotorua Eastern Arterial, in Bay of Plenty.
This investment is on top of the $360 million we’ve already proposed for regional roading. Together, that’s nearly $600 million for roading projects to keep our regions moving in the right direction.
National is working for New Zealand. Our plan will help to ensure the benefits of the recovery are spread across the country.
